Hummingbirds and Old English..back to school!

books

Summer time is fun time..also some school time…which we make as fun as possible. Really, anything is a learning experience, right? 😀

We have these old, really old books from Piccolos in Belmont, an awesome antique store. $20.00 for all those red books on children’s classics. Dated 1912.  Really, not THAT old. I love old books! Dated similar is that smaller brown book; it belonged to my grandfather. It was his elementary math book! Now it’s Taliesin’s, and he uses it!  The larger brown book on the left there is from England (also from Piccolos) and it is dated 1806. Title, The Guardian, from London. The book is old to the point where the ‘s’ are ‘f’. Pretty cool! I love old books!! I think (or hope) Tali appreciates, too.

I’ve been trying to take photos of birds, particularly, hummingbirds at the feeder. I’ll be out on the deck, and not have my camera at the best moments!!  So here are a couple for you!  I took the one of the hummingbird hanging out on the clothing line today. Hurricane Hermine is around here but we are only getting the tail-end of it. Some wind, some rain here near Charlotte, NC. I really hope everyone else is alright.

Soap Revamped!

This year I haven’t added any new soaps to my line, not including my temporary summer soap, Bora Bora.  However, I have noticed my Charcoal Aloe soap, with skin loving activated bamboo charcoal, is a low seller. It has a few die-hard fans though; and there is no way I wanted to dismiss a soap with charcoal ! !

Bamboo charcoal: Make pores smaller and cleaner, Take care of oily skin, Deep clean your skin, Soothe and heal bites, cuts and skin irritations,  Rid your hair and skin of toxins. Yes, try this in your hair!  (from Best Health magazine)

I gave the soap a new look (no more green-it always looked odd to me) and ADDED HEMP OIL.

Some hemp oil benefits – Regenerates & Energizes The Skin’s Protective Layer: Due to its high content of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, hemp oil has a composition similar to skin lipids, which makes it an excellent natural emollient and moisturizer. It is especially useful for dry, tired or dehydrated skin and nails. It increases the skin elasticity and water retention capacity in tissues. Also, known to help against varicose veins and psoriasis. Great for luscious hair!

Homeschoolin’ Time and Want Some Fall Weather!

P1060045
We are ready for some fall apple picking at Skytop in NC! This pic is a few years old. 🙂

I haven’t posted in a while…family from Ohio coming to visit and my son’s 13th birthday party. Seems like yesterday he was just a baby!!

When I went to school, we Always started that glorious day (I used to like school lol) the day after Labor Day.   Ah, school in the 70s! Anyway, it was good enough for me, so it’s good enough for Tali to start at that time as well.  However, I decided to start school today! Yeah! I have some awesome workbooks by Spectrum and a couple Lit books from used homeschool fair, so why not, I am too excited!

Taliesin, however, is not…lol.  To be expected, I guess.  I play some relaxing, but not sleepy music, and set a nice mood for learning. Maybe some Native flute, or Asian themed music. Such a nice way for continuing to bond with your child!

There is a lot of info. out there and the computer for reference is a homeschool mom’s (and dad’s) best friend.  Here are some links I hope you find helpful.  Cheers!

I am REALLY looking forward to fall. August in southern NC is buggy, humid, and hot. Fall is long and gorgeous!! Cool weather, beautiful trees…and learning with hot cocoa on the deck.

Tomatoes and Summer Fun

blog pic3Mondays are the best time for my blog posts, since Monday’s are my energy days!  Much to the annoyance of past office colleagues I would stroll into work with a huge smile on Monday and greet everyone enthusiastically; I have NO idea why I am like this, but I have always been like this. 🙂

North Carolina has had some record hot days this summer! I think everyone has! Thankfully, we have gotten a LOT cooler, 78 degrees now as I write this..so my Roma’s and cucumbers are doing well again…tomatoes can take a lot of heat, cucs not so much.  I have the basil along the tomatoes so they are happy, growing a little bush! 🙂

Can you see the cucumbers? Kinda like, Where’s Waldo..

I want to say something about tomatoes..they love egg shells  (powdered in blender) and soil without so much nitrogen. There is special ‘tomato soil’ sold for this reason, but this year we forgot and so there were a LOT of little green tomatoes with black rotted spots on the bottom. Also, this year, I did not blend the egg shells to a powder..I just crushed them up..I think that wasn’t enough?  😦  a spray took care of this thankfully!!  We now have lovely, meaty Roma tomatoes.

As an ‘unschooler’ (no rigid schedule) we school off and on all summer long. Summer is so much fun for homeschoolers…so much time with his homeschool friends in this wonderful, happy secular (accepts families of ALL faiths) group, swimming, playing games, eating out and movies.  Today though, Taliesin, after playing with a friend down the street, is doing some math. I can’t believe he will be in 7th grade! !

Lip balm lip balm lip balm….

My Shea Butter lip butter balm flavors have changed over the years due to flavors becoming obsolete or just not a favorite. I started this business making only lip balms as I LOVE a GOOD lip balm–I keep one in my car, purse, bedside and pocket!

cropped-all-lip-balms-together.jpg

I love my newest flavor: Isle of Apples, named after the Isle of Avalon.  King Author, Morgana..love them all!  This lip balm has a green tart apple flavor that is far from boring, I’m really happy with it!

Another flavor is Herbal Tea, which includes essential oils of peppermint, rosemary, and a hint of eucalyptus. My friend who had a cold sore said it cleared right up after using this lip balm. I was actually trying to duplicate Burt’s Bees and did a pretty good job, though mine is not as minty strong; people just didn’t seem to like it.

Wild Cherry Blossom is a yummy black cherry flavor that is my personal favorite!

Lemongrass is a fav for many, just simple lemongrass essential oil added.

Strawberry Fields has been out since the beginning, as Herbal Tea. A flavor/smell like a sweet strawberry pie!

Sunshine Orange lip balm I really like, like fresh OJ in the morning, refreshing! Reminds me of the sweet tangelo juice in Florida!

Raspberry Ice is made special for a lovely local author who lives near me. Series is called Charity Moon. Here is the link to buy this book:  http://www.amazon.com/Charity-Moon-ebook/dp/B007TXFIC6/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334414818&sr=1-3

Banana-rama.  I stopped making this one for a while, then after popular demand, brought it back. A nice tropical flavor that reminds me of a banana daiquiri. 🙂

Springtime homeschoolin’ & fruit water

Taliesin is really studying hard for his finals (CAT) coming up in June:

tali homeschool 2014

Fruit water is SOOO easy to make, and it’s so pretty! Last year I was adding fruit to large pitchers of water and stashing them in the fridge..they kept alright but I like this way better: I simply add fruit to each glass plus some sprigs of mint from the garden. Sometimes I add a little touch of sugar and then mash it a bit with a potato masher to release the juices (if I do mash it I have the fruit in a bowl). Then add some water from our Brita pitcher and all done!  I got the idea of the strawberries from Belmont NC by the park on Main Street. They have a vendor there with the BEST fruit water ever!

Homemade soap keeps that natural glycerin! No soap cleans like homemade.

2013 was a wonderful year for my family and Faerykissnaturals in Gaston County, North Carolina!  This is my new site where you are still able to buy from my Etsy store!  I make handcrafted CP (homemade, no short cuts) soaps, solid Shea butter lotions, lip Shea butter balms, herbal salves too since 2007.

I really have fun doing it! I got my certification at the Fort Lauderdale Natural Health College in Skin Care (esthetician) in 2002.  I also have an Associates in Applied Science

The Shea butter and avocado oil bring out a wonderful creaminess.
Who doesn’t love a pretty, handmade soap for Valentines? I have a sensual Rose and more, check it out!

Butterfly Garden Soap

My soaps are large, creamy, sudsy, and reasonably priced! I ship all over the world and sell in many shops in my area around Gaston County, NC:  Organic Marketplace, The Schiele Museum, Mattie Maes, Things Remembered, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Lowes Foods in Gaston County, Charlotte Landings Gifts (at the airport), Piccolo Antiques in Belmont,  Running with Scissors hair salon, Angels Upscale Consignments in Bessemer City and Church’s Spa.
